Reflection

When I arrived on the first day of class I was anticipating the exciting new curriculum. I had the instructor for a previous class and was very satisfied from the amount of knowledge and experience I had gained from the instructor. This previous experience contributed to the excitement I had for this next class. After the first day of class I realized what to expect. I was pretty nervous when we went through how we are going to be blogging online and having peers read our essays and give us feedback, because I had never blogged before. However I was also anticipating the start of our blog postings because the instructor made the class material very interesting.

The third post we had to do was integrating voice. While thinking of what to write for this post I struggled quite a bit because I could not figure out exactly how I should incorporate my voice into certain articles. As time passed I started thinking of what my intention as a writer is, and what I am trying to portray to the audience. This aided me in writing my post because I discovered that if you think critically of what you’re trying to portray to the audience and how you are going to use your words, in the end you will have an excellent piece which you are satisfied with. A major problem I had with this writing assignment was that I could not find an appropriate article to write about.  But I thought about how voice integrated along with an informative article can be more appealing and expressive to an audience so I thought about a personal experience, from which I could use empathy as a tool to make my writing assignment more effective.

Our second post rewriting the news appealed to me a great amount. This is because a lot of times when I had read various news articles I would constantly come across articles that would not make sense. What I mean by that, is the articles would have information at the end that should have been at the beginning and did not establish adequate context.  So I learned that you have to use appropriate style, tone, and format to the writer’s purpose and audience. When I wrote my assignment I knew that I had to keep my audience in mind, because if I didn’t the article would become less effective in presenting information which is my ultimate goal. For example I rewrote an informative news article and it was originally wrote in a big clump of writing,  I realized that this big clump of information is not effective at all to the reader because it lacks the visual supplementation to interest the reader. So what I did is that I put the information into small sections with headers and established context at the beginning to what the article was about. Overall I learned how to keep the audience in mind in order to make my article more effective.

At first I thought that the process analysis essay was going to be easy. But I learned that it was more difficult than I thought. In my first draft I wrote about how to build a restaurant and after it was done I thought it was perfect. But the next day we had peer reviews which was one of my favorite parts of class, because through that I had the opportunity to make my essay better, and also had the opportunity to critique my peer’s essays which also contributed to my skills as a writer. Through the peer review I realized that I had to add headers in my essay which are very important for process analysis essays, because it visually supplemented the content of your essay in which someone is trying to accomplish what you have written. Another thing I realized was that it is necessary to have your steps completely in order because the audience has to have an exact replica of your finished product. Overall this essay made me realize the importance of visual supplementation to an essay and how it can organize your essay to make it more effective for the audience.

At the end of this class I realized that every single one of the essays I wrote made me think of how to make my writing more effective. Back at my high school my teacher would give us a prompt and make us write an essay on it. This class made me actually think about my purpose as a writer, and how I should convey my message to the audience, because that overall makes an effective writing piece. Now that this amazing class with a brilliant instructor has come to an end, I have thought about what I can pursue in the future when it comes to writing. Posts such as rewriting the news and integrating voice have given me a keen interest in going into journalism. This class has increased my writing skills a great amount, and through this experience I am looking forward to my future writing classes with great confidence.

Post 9

It has transformed our world through its expressiveness and emotion, poetry is a force to be reckoned with. Not only has it paved the way to strengthen communal ties and liberate people from sufferings, but it has also been used as a powerful tool to rebel against oppression. This form of expression has granted us the ability to explore a perception of our world contrary to the mainstream ideology. Analyzing poetry can allow us to have an enhanced understanding of our society, however in order to accomplish that it is necessary to examine the technique in which poetry is conveyed. There are a multitude of styles used in poems, however the most expressive and communicative ones are sonnets, ghazals, and ballads.

Sonnets

One of the most prevalent forms of poetry, sonnets originated in Europe, mainly Provence and Italy. Usually sonnets consist of 14 lines. By the thirteenth century sonnets came to be known as a poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme, which is a pattern of rhyming between lines of a poem. The structure of a typical Italian sonnet has two parts that together formed a compact form of "argument". The first part forms the proposition which describes a problem, followed by the second part which proposes a resolution. In the ninth line the poem usually reaches a turn and signals a change in the mood, tone, or stance of the poem.  One of the most renowned sonnet writers was William Shakespeare, who is widely regarded as one of the best writers in the English language. Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets which were his non-dramatic works. One of Shakespeare’s most popular works is “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” This poem uses a very strong tool of expression which is comparison. Shakespeare compares the woman’s beauty to a summer day, however he also points out “Thou art more lovely and more temperate,” meaning her beauty exceeds that of a summer day. He also says “But thy eternal summer shall not fade,” meaning the woman’s beauty will last forever despite the fact that summer comes and goes. This example portrays how in sonnets the authors use expression in different forms such as comparison in order to increase the effectiveness of the text.

Ghazals

A Ghazal is a poetic form originating in 6th century Arabia, they consist of rhyming couplets and a chorus with each line having the same meter. The concept of Ghazal can be defined as expressing the pain one goes through while experiencing the loss or separation of love. It also defines the beauty of love in spite of the pain one endures. Ghazals were written by Persian mystics and poets such as Rumi in the 13th century.  Ghazals traditionally deal with one subject, which is love, to be more specific unattainable love. In the Indian subcontinent the Ghazals have an influence from Islamic mysticism, in which love can be interpreted for a divine being or a mortal beloved. Love is portrayed in Ghazals as something that will complete a human being, and if achieved it will one into the ranks of the wise and learned, and bring an intense satisfaction into the soul of the poet. The Ghazal is always written in the point of view of a lover whose beloved is unattainable. Usually the beloved does not return the love or returns it without sincerity, and the lover is aware of their inevitable fate but continues loving nonetheless.  The lyrical motivation derives from this tension in which the lover is unable to resist his feelings for his beloved. In one of Rumi’s poems from his collection called the fountain of fire he says “The night is generous, it can give you a gift of the full moon it can bless your soul with endless treasure.” In this poem something Inanimate like the night is given human characteristics such as being generous. Instead of just saying the night has the full moon, it says it is generous and the moon is a gift. By incorporating these human qualities to lifeless objects, the poem increases the effectiveness of its communicative properties, by relating the text back to the reader.

Ballads.

Ballads are poems that are in a form of narratives set to music. Ballads were popular in British and Irish poetry form the later medieval period until the 19th century and used in a large amount amongst the Europeans. Ballads may have originated from Scandinavian and German traditions of storytelling for example the story of Beowulf. European Ballads have been generally classified into three groups traditional broadside and literary. Traditional Ballads originated with street poets of late medieval Europe, in their poems they incorporated stories which told of existing or imaginary historical events. In the end of the 15th century you will find printed Ballads which would suggest a rich tradition of popular music, also Ballads such as Robin Hood were sung in the 14 century. Traditional Ballads can also be separated into different themes such as religious, love, historic, and humorous. Broadside Ballads were typically a product of cheap print in the 16th century, being printed on a large sheet of poor quality paper. In the first half of the 17th century the alluring poems were printed in black gothic type letters, they also included unique illustrations which caught the reader’s glance. They were produced in large quantities with over 400,000 being sold in England annually by the 1660s. Among the topics were drinking-songs, early journalism, which was comprised of disasters, and political events and wonders. In the 18th century Literary Ballads were increasingly popular among the social elites and intellectuals, when they derived an interest in the ballad form. Some writers would collect and form their own ballad in order to create an artistic product; Ballads are significant in the world because they define cultural values and alter people’s perceptions about social norms creating a more intellectual society. Here is an excerpt from the Ballad of Robin hood and little John, “Tho he was called little, his limbs they were large, and his stature was seven foot high, where-ever he came they quak’d at his name, for soon he would make them to fly. In order to give an informative description of little John this Ballad uses the communicative tool of rhyming. Through rhyming the author increases the ability of the reader to ingest information, therefore making the piece easier to read.

Poetry has led society to reflect on its wisdom, and has shaped our society’s way of thinking by its Expressiveness and communicative properties. Whether it be sonnets, Ghazals, or Ballads, these poetic styles have influenced human emotions through their unique methods of communication. Overall through its expression we have evolved as humans, and have gained consciousness of the reality we had no knowledge of. When poetry is written about racism it sheds light on its ignorance, and when it is written the reality of human misery in this world its emotion enables us to have a sense of morality. Poetry certainly has granted us the knowledge that the pen is mightier than the sword.

how to build a restaurant revision

Remarkably, one in four Americans eat out daily. In USA weekly Statistics show that consumers are more inclined to dine out and take prepared food home as opposed to arranging their own meals.  In this day and age running a restaurant can have great benefits, if done efficiently it can be extremely profitable. But before you open a restaurant it is necessary to have the proper concept and financial planning in mind for your potential restaurant. In order to achieve success in building and maintaining a restaurant business, it is necessary to adhere to these fundamental steps, Developing a theme, finding a location, secure funding, finding a supply market, hire a staff, go through a health department inspection, and advertise.
THEME
When you are beginning to develop the intention of building a restaurant, keep in mind that it is necessary to have a theme according to your preference. You should have an idea of what type of food you will serve, what you want your atmosphere to be like, and what kind of patrons you will be most likely catering towards.
FIND A LOCATION
Afterwards it is up to you to find a location of your preference. Keep in mind that location is by far the most important step in building a restaurant business, it can be a great advantage if located next to major grocery stores and outlets, for there will be a much more variety of customers that will be interested in coming to your restaurant. So take much precaution when figuring out the final location for your restaurant. Now that you have your location in mind, you have to think about whether you are going to buy the property or rent it. Buying will give you a chance to increase your profitability by a large amount, but you take a risk of being stuck with a property that doesn’t attract many customers. If you rent the property you have the ability to switch when you have the need to increase profits
SECURE FUNDING
Once you have determined the location for your restaurant you should start to secure funding, and develop a budget for startup costs. If you do not have the appropriate amount of money to contribute to your restaurant then you can always use small business loans used by many successful business owners. Once you start up the restaurant and start maintaining a profit you can gradually pay back your loan.
CHOOSE SUPPLY OUTLET.
Now it is necessary to consider which outlet you will purchase kitchen items from. Make sure to get every single tool you need or you will come up short when it is time to prepare food for customers. You will have to start up with the necessary cooking tools such as ovens, stoves, freezers and eating utensils. Choose a supplier which suits your restaurant’s needs in food and beverage. You can choose different foods from different suppliers, but it can get a little hectic because the staff needs to check the food coming in from different days and stock them up in the freezer.  Remember to choose foods that will be needed in your recipe for your specific cuisine.
HIRE A STAFF
Next you must hire a staff. Hire employees that are trustworthy and are educated to a level of your preference, and which suits their capability in their profession. When looking for chefs hire the ones that are knowledgeable and talented in cooking the appropriate cuisine of the restaurant. When looking for waiters find people who have a good attitude and a sociable personality. You don’t want the customers running away from terrible service.
GET AN INSPECTION FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT>
Later, Set up an appointment with the local health department and go through an inspection. They will check everything in order to make sure there are no hazards for your potential customers. They will check the cleanliness of your restaurant, making sure the workers wear gloves while they prepare food. They will also check to see if the washing hands reminder poster is posted on the bathroom walls. Once you have passed and have become licensed, it is time to advertise.
             ADVERTISE
You now have to put the effort in to advertise and market your restaurant. You can have the best food and service, but if you don’t put the effort in to market your business you will see a huge loss in profit. You can put flyers around your city, make a website, or pay stores to put up a small advertisement box on their counters. Your main focus should always be on the public, if they are not pleased with something then you must change it because it is they’re preference which makes you the money.

It can be rough when you are first trying to build a restaurant out of scratch and being confused of where to begin, but if you carefully follow these fundamental guidelines of how to go about building a restaurant, it will ensure you to be successful in building and maintaining a restaurant business.

racism

When we look upon the inconceivable evils which have occurred throughout the existence of the human race we discover something fascinating. The root cause of these evils was the pure animosity towards another fellow human being, and having absolutely no regard for their life, property, and family. This hatred which humans have exposed to one another has been a wicked and shameful portion of our history, but hatred has its roots too. Hatred is a product of a much larger phenomenon, which is racism. Most people perceive racism to be the belief that one's own race is superior to all others. This particular ideology has resulted in humans committing mass genocide, rape, and the social restrictions on certain races. It is incumbent on us to further expand our knowledge on the instigating disease of hatred known has racism.
In the 19th century, it was apparent to scientists that human populations reside in different geographical locations and are divided into separate races. However certain figures such as Adolph Hitler, and the leaders of the confederate movement in the south used this fact to justify the belief that some races are inferior to one another, and that it was appropriate to treat other races differently than you would treat your own.  They also held the belief of a “Master Race,” which held the philosophy that the white race was superior in genetics to all other races.

As a word, racism is an "ism", a belief that is described by a word ending in the suffix -ism, pertaining to race. The term racism itself did not appear in the English language until the 1930’s. It was first used as the term racialism in which means for a particular race to be superior. After World War II the term racism had negative connotations attached to it, which implied harmful intent, and discrimination.

Sadly when we look around different parts of the world today we don’t see everyone together in harmony singing kumbaya, and embracing one another regardless of their differences in skin pigments. But we see the opposite, we see humans who lack even an atom’s worth of empathy towards other humans who go through the same struggles, just because they are not similar in their outward appearance.
Racism entails that each and every race has its own specific traits and capacities, meaning if you are from race A you do not encompass all of the capabilities and traits of race B, which has resulted in racial stereotypes.  It also suggests that superior races have better understanding and are more knowledgeable than inferior races. This has led to many individuals of different races being denied jobs by being judged on the intellectual capability based on their racial origin.

The theory of racism resulted in the segregation of races in different parts of the world, such as South Africa, India, and the U.S.  The opinion was held that the superior races needed separate and higher quality facilities than the inferior race. Inferior races were forced to live in neighborhoods specified for their particular race in order to keep order.
Racists belief that they deserve better for being who they are. They believe that since birth they attained superiority and are better than the rest of humanity. For them it is acceptable to beat, ridicule, and murder members of an inferior race because they have been born into a lower “less deserving race.”

This nonsensical ideology has caused the deaths of countless individuals and ruined the lives of many more. But by attaining a better understanding of the term we can as humans realize the idiotic concept of racism , because we as humans regardless of race scientifically have the same capabilities and are not to be judged by our skin but by the content of our character.

Post 3

This day seemed hopeless. Going through traffic on my way home from school I faced the usual frantic and pitiless commuters. As traffic increased the thoughts circulating through my mind were rather unpleasant. As I approached a red light I felt a vibration on my leg, irritated I looked down to see an incoming call from my father. Being flooded with the anxiety of school and the hideous traffic situation I was not very enthusiastic for having a little chit chat with the big man, which usually consists of me being scolded for procrastinating too much. I ignored the call and put the phone away, within seconds I felt another vibration, I looked to see that I have 3 text messages from my maternal cousins. The first one read “Gadaffi was just shot!!”  The second one read “LIBYA IS OFFICIALLY FREE.”  Immediately my mother came to mind, she comes from a Libyan heritage and has three sisters and four brothers in Libya, with whom we lost contact for a long period. My mother would shudder when she heard reporters on the television delivering the numbers of recent casualties, but always kept hope.

As i stared at my steering wheel pondering about what will happen next, I heard two continuous sharp horns edging me on to go since the light just turned green. After hearing the good news I didn’t even bother to give a slight tap of the horn for retaliation. On my way home I was a bit skeptical on the details surrounding the death of Gadaffi, because I thought it was too soon for him to be both suddenly apprehended and killed in the same day, but I hoped for the best. There was an incredible feeling of both joy and relief for my mother since she had endured a lot of emotional hardship, concerning her family and not having contact with them, and for the people of Libya who struggled through day to day life, living under a tyrant. As I pulled onto my driveway my heart was racing, the thought of opening the door to my families cheering faces greeting me and embracing me into their arms with tears flowing. But as I opened the door I was in shock.
I saw my family sitting at the television screen with an extreme look of shock in their eyes. I turned my head towards the television screen and I saw many Libyan rebels brutally beating up and verbally abusing Gadaffi in Arabic. It was a horrific sight, he was bloody and looked rather confused and was trying to say something as everyone beat him. My father saw me and said in a shaky tone “my son our brothers and sisters can smell the fragrance of freedom.”  My father told my younger brothers to go on into their rooms, for this was not something for them to see. My eyes turned towards my mother who looked at the Television screen silently with tears flowing down her face. I ran to her and gave her a hug and she patted my head and told me that my grandpa called from Libya and told her that her brothers and sisters are safe and with him. I could not help but to burst into tears because In reality I had lost all hope for them, because of the continuous massacres in Libya. I went towards my father and gave him a hug.

At last, the day arrived when the innocent young didn’t have to cover their heads with fear when they roamed the streets. When families rejoiced in seeing their loved ones, and when freedom rained on the country of Libya and its people.
